Profit Margin Formula

Profit is calculated by subtracting the cost price from the selling price.

Profit = Selling Price − Cost Price

Profit margin is calculated as the profit divided by the selling price, multiplied by 100.

Profit Margin = (Profit ÷ Selling Price) × 100

Markup percentage is calculated using the cost price as the base.

Markup = (Profit ÷ Cost Price) × 100

Example

Suppose a product costs ₹500 and is sold for ₹750.

Profit = ₹750 − ₹500 = ₹250

Profit Margin = (₹250 ÷ ₹750) × 100 = 33.33%

Markup = (₹250 ÷ ₹500) × 100 = 50%

Therefore, the product has a profit of ₹250, a profit margin of 33.33% and a markup of 50%.

Profit Margin vs Markup

Profit margin and markup are related but they use different bases for calculation.

For example, if the cost price is ₹100 and the selling price is ₹150, the profit is ₹50. The profit margin is 33.33%, while the markup is 50%.
